Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation about The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
